EXCERPT

They were a third of the way there. Ciara Fanning knew if she could manage to stay conscious, they’d all likely live to see another day. She had to get her two young patients to the Alliance base at Fort Saken. It was their only chance. Judging by the blood she’d started coughing up a while ago, it might be her only chance, too.

She tightened her hands on the steering wheel and forced herself to focus on the road instead of the pain that came with every labored breath she took. She knew what the problem was. One of her broken ribs had pierced her lung, and the injury was being aggravated by every bump and pothole
.
She’d called the badlands home for more than ten years now, walking away from her Alliance upbringing. She hadn’t done it for political reasons or need for adventure. She’d wound up here through a series of events and had discovered she could make a difference out here, so she’d stayed. Plus, it put plenty of distance between her and her family. That was a definite perk. Growing up as an infertile female in her family had been hard enough, but Ciara had never been able to match the accomplishments of her older siblings. Her brothers were Alliance elites, and her sister was a fertile scroll, living a life of luxury as the chosen of two affluent elites with powerful families.

Her tenth birthday had come with great expectations and fanfare, and ended with her family’s bitter disappointment. Like every other child in the Alliance, she was tested for fertility at age ten, but unlike her siblings, there was no celebration at the end of the day. The freshly applied star tattoo by her right eye announced her shame to the world. She was infertile. Her family had never forgiven her. Instead, they’d done their best to forget she existed at all. Eventually, not even that had been enough. As far as Ciara was concerned, her life truly started the day she’d left home.

Another bump in the road made her wince, forcing her mind back from its wanderings to focus on the immediate problem of staying alive. If the earthquake hadn’t destroyed her clinic, she’d have been able to stabilize them before they had to travel. If most of the inhabitants hadn’t been out trading goods and services at the monthly market a half day’s journey away, there’d have been someone else around to drive. If she’d been wearing her stars-be-damned wrist unit, she could have summoned help. If. If. If. If wishes were rockets, then beggars would fly. None of those things had happened, so she was going to have to make it to the Alliance base on her own.

There was a low, agonized moan from the backseat of the transpo, and she glanced into the rearview mirror to check on her patients. Danny was still unconscious, but his little brother, Kyle, had been drifting in and out of awareness since she’d found him pinned beneath the rubble of what had once been their home. Their father was trading wares at the market. Their mother had given up her life to protect her sons, shielding them from the worst of the collapse with her own body. Neither boy was aware of their loss, not yet. And if she didn’t get them to the Alliance base’s medical center soon, their father might be mourning them as well. She gripped the steering wheel tighter and pushed the ancient transpo to its limits.

She was running out of time.

Time passed in flickering jumps as the miles ticked by. There were flashes of awareness followed by blank stretches where she operated by will and instinct alone. Then she saw it, a plume of dust on the road ahead of her. Someone else was out here, and they were coming from the direction of Fort Saken.

Thank the stars.

Minutes later, she saw the source of the dust, and she breathed a sigh of relief. They were Alliance personnel and better yet, one of the vehicles was marked with the red cross that meant medical help. They must have detected the earthquake and come to assist. She managed to stay conscious long enough to pull over to the side of the road as the others arrived. She finally let herself pass out, escaping the pain that had dogged her every second since she’d dragged herself out of the wreckage of her clinic. Her last thoughts were for the two boys she’d pulled out of the rubble. She hoped they made it.

3013: ALTERED - New Release

It's Here! 3013: ALTERED, the next book in the 3013 series has arrived.

Commander Ivy Dalton doesn’t believe in luck or chance. Everything in her life—her career, her ship, the respect of her peers—she’s worked hard to earn. When she and her crew are attacked during an exploration mission, sending her ship crashing onto an unidentified planet, her only concern is finding a way to contact the Alliance. She never expected a single, tiny incident in the infinite reaches of space to challenge all she thought she knew about fate, destiny, and…love.

For thousands of years, King Kai Blackthorn has ruled over the people of his planet with selflessness and compassion, never taking anything for himself. Recently, however, he’s grown weary, malcontent, and the loneliness that has plagued him for centuries has become too pronounced to ignore. Then all that changes with the unexpected arrival of one sassy blonde with luscious curves and a dangerously sharp tongue.

Caught in the midst of intolerance and corruption, two strangers from different worlds struggle to find a way to coexist. Kai can’t abandon his people, and Ivy can’t imagine a life grounded in one place. But fate will not be ignored. Decisions must be made, compromises that will change the course of their lives. For no matter which destination they choose, the journey will leave them forever altered.

Her hostile stance eased marginally, and her mouth softened at the corners. “That,” she said, pointed to the translator, “is a language converter? It’ll allow me to understand you?”

Pleased, Kai smiled as he offered her the blinking strip of gold-plated metal. At the same time, he carefully removed his own translator, paused, and slid it back onto his earlobe, demonstrating to her how to wear it.

After a long, tense hesitation, Ivy shuffled around the chair with her arm outstretched, allowing Kai to drop the translator into her waiting hand. She didn’t affix it immediately, but studied the device for several long seconds.

“It looks like a staple,” she murmured. “Are you sure it works?”

Kai couldn’t help but laugh as he nodded his affirmation.

“Okay, here goes nothing.” Brushing a stray lock of golden hair back from face, she slid the translator onto her lobe, just as he’d shown her. “Well,” she said after a moment, “say something.”

“What would you have me say, my lady?”

“Oh.” Her full lips parted with a silent gasp, and her emerald eyes sparkled like the waters of the ocean. “Say something else.”

“Welcome, Commander Ivy Dalton, to the high city of Sommervail.”

“Incredible,” she whispered.

A sharp pain rippled through his chest and down his abdomen, stealing his breath with its intensity. His legs began to shake, his pulse raced dangerously, and heat swept over his skin. All at once, he felt dizzy, unsteady on his feet, and shadows blotted the edges of his vision.

“Kai—it’s Kai, right?” Ivy took a single step closer. “Uh, are you okay?”

“Merely the excitement of the day.” He needed to get away from her before he did something humiliating, like faint at her feet. “I apologize.” Gripping the doorframe when the dizziness threatened to overwhelm him, he squeezed until his knuckles turned white. “We’ll speak again in the morning.”

“Wait, I have questions. You can’t just keep me here like this.”

“The captain will answer any inquiries you may have.” As if summoned, Tira appeared at his side. “Tira, I’ll leave it to your discretion.” He tried to smile, but by the females’ worried expressions, he imagined he’d failed miserably. “Until our next meeting.” He lowered his head slightly toward Ivy. “Rest well, my lady.”

Retreating, he staggered down the stairs, leaning heavily on the railing, and stumbled through the corridors until he reached his chambers. It troubled him to leave Ivy after such a short meeting, but with his stomach churning and his head pounding, he could barely undress before collapsing onto his bed.

The silky gray sheets felt cool against his overheated skin, and the soft mattress cradled his aching body. Every muscle, tendon, and joint pained him. Even his hair follicles hurt. Stars above, he didn’t know what had come over him, but a part of him felt death would be preferable to such suffering.

Illness didn’t plague the inhabitants of Xenthian. Not once in over four thousand years had Kai experienced even something as minor as a sniffle. In the back of his mind, the part still fighting against what he already knew, he wondered if Ivy had somehow bewitched him. Burying his face into the pillow with a groan, he dismissed the notion as quickly as it came.

He was lying to himself, had been from the moment he’d walked into Ivy’s room. Upon seeing her, he’d felt the pull, the unshakeable desire to be near her. His entire being swayed toward the beauty, something inside him shifting to make room for this magnificent being he’d never even considered existed.

Kai wanted her. Not for a day, a night, or even a hundred years. He wanted eternity with her. His heart had recognized what his mind had not, and his body had taken it upon itself to respond in the ways of their kind.

Soulmate.

Being in Ivy’s presence had been like standing in the eye of a great storm, both beautiful and terrifying in the way she consumed him.

Soulmate.

New Release - 3013: CHAOS!

3013: CHAOS

The eighth book in this best selling sci-fi/futuristic series!

Katra Tesera is a female Dragon Warrior on a mission. Unsatisfied with the life her family wishes for her back on her home world, she seeks something more for her own future. When the opportunity to visit Earth arises, Katra is eager for the excitement and adventure of traveling the stars. She believes she is ready for whatever lies at the end of her journey, but nothing can prepare her for meeting her mate…the dark and dangerous Tarin warrior, Lord Jaden Tor.

Warlord Jaden Tor is a dedicated leader who is fighting a civil war to save his people. He has always known his path in life, but everything changes the moment he meets the dark-haired beauty with glowing silver eyes. Jaden wants to claim her for his own, however, there is more at stake than his own happiness…

When legacies are challenged, and with Tartarus in turmoil, can Jaden and Katra find a way to be together, or will their love be shattered by the chaos that threatens everything around them?

EXCERPT

Once Katra and Jaden were alone together, he straightened to his full height and used his most lordly tone when he said, “Tartarus is my world, and my word is law. Once we land, you will obey.”

“Keep dreaming, Tarin.” Katra turned on her heels, and headed for the door.

Dismissed. She’d just fucking dismissed him. No one had ever tried the like with Jaden before. His people knew better, and anyone else would have been too concerned of his formidable wrath to even consider it.

Katra was ready for it when he grabbed her arm and spun her around so she was facing him again, but she hadn’t been prepared for what would happen when he touched her skin for the first time. Energy surged up her arm from where his hand touched her and sent such a strong jolt of lust racing through her system that it made her snarl. She had to fight back the need to throw herself at him and take what belonged to her.

Jaden’s expression was furious as he shoved his face close to hers. “You will obey,” he repeated in a snarl of his own. “Or I will keep your sweet ass confined to the human outpost. I won’t have you flying off on your own and getting into trouble.”

“I am a Dragon Warrior. I do not need your protection.”

He flung her arm away from him as if touching her had burned him. “You do need protection…from yourself. You think you’re invincible, but you can still be killed.”

“I am more than capable defending myself—”

“Your magic be damned!” Jaden raged. “What good will your magic do if someone cuts off your head? I will not have your death on my hands. Don’t push me on this, Katra.”

Perhaps that was the problem. She hadn’t pushed him enough to deal with what was between them. Well, that was going to change. Katra’s glowing eyes flared bright with challenge. Reaching up, she used both of her hands to shove him back a step, then watched his eyes go comically wide with shock.

“Do you really think me so unskilled that I cannot defend myself without my magic? Maybe I should show you just how capable I am.”

She went to push him again, but he gripped her wrists. Turning around, she caught him off guard when she used the momentum to flip him over her shoulder. She’d expected him to fall flat on his back, but he used his own agility to twist and land on his feet. The move impressed her.

Damn, she wanted him.

“What in thunder do you think you’re doing? I’m not going to fight you, female.”

“Aye, you are. Show me your strength, if you dare,” Katra taunted. She could see a battle light enter his dark eyes, and it aroused her. Wanting to goad him further, she raised one hand and gestured him forward with two fingers. “Come, warrior. Do not worry, I will not hurt you…too much.”

He came at her fast. It was as if a switch had been turned off inside of him, and she was seeing the real Jaden for the first time. The thought thrilled her, and she struggled to hold back a grin as she countered each move with precision and skill.

It took great effort not to use her magic, but she was determined to meet him on even ground. They fought for supremacy, but both of them were careful not to really hurt the other. It was like they were doing some strange sort of dance, moving and counter-moving without thought. The restraint they used made the fight more a kind of ferocious foreplay, each of them testing their opponent’s weaknesses, while marveling at the other’s strengths.

Chairs and tables were overturned as they continued to fight. They moved around the room, leaving destruction in their wake. His heavy muscles made it difficult to match his sheer strength, but she was faster and more agile than he was. She ran at the wall and used it as a springboard to launch herself over his head as he pulverized a table that was in his way to get to her.

Katra thought she had propelled herself far enough, but she underestimated Jaden’s determination. In one motion, he turned, grabbed her around the throat and spun her around, slamming her back against the wall. Instinct had her striking out, but she pulled her punch before she made contact so she didn’t take his head off. Still, she ended up clipping him as he jerked his head to the side, right into the path of her fist.

“Enough!” Jaden snarled.

Their gazes met and held, both of them breathing hard. A small trickle of blood appeared at the side of his mouth from where she’d hit him. Katra wanted to lean in and taste him, to take him inside her so they would always be connected, except she couldn’t move. Couldn’t look away from his stormy eyes. Aye, he was angry, but there was something else in his dark gaze.

Passion.

They walked to the open doorway, and Carrs knocked twice, drawing the attention of one of the two men standing watching the surveillance footage. His hair was so blond it was almost white, and when he turned around to face her she found herself surprised at the sudden surge of sexual heat that coursed through her veins at the sight of the new commander. He was younger than she’d expected, and far better looking. He filled out his uniform in a way she could truly appreciate, and despite the fact he was only a few inches taller than she was, his physical presence made him seem much larger. He had a face that looked like it had been sculpted by a master artist, a study in symmetry and male beauty. In short, he was gorgeous, and for the second time in a matter of days, T’karra found herself powerfully attracted to a man she knew nearly nothing about.

It was disconcerting as hell.

“T’karra Ryvern is here, Sirs,” Carrs announced.

“Thank you, Officer…Carrs, isn’t it? You may report back to your station.”

“Yes, sir.” Carrs thumped his fist over his chest in salute before turning on his heel and walking away, leaving T’karra standing in the doorway. The blond commander smiled and gestured for her to come inside, his aqua-blue eyes gleaming with intelligence and…interest?

“Please come in and have a seat. We had intended on asking you to meet with us later today, but since you’re already here, now is as good a time as later. I’m Commander Brandt Carver, by the way.”

She stepped into the room and offered the handsome commander a cautious smile as he closed the door behind her, ensuring their privacy. “I am T’karra of the Ryvern pack. It is good to have you here at last. Things have been…uncertain of late.”

Carver smiled, a true smile that softened the sharp lines of his face. “That’s one way of putting it. I know you have questions. My partner and I don’t have all the answers yet, but we can tell you what we do know, and how we intend to proceed.”

“I’d appreciate an update, thank you. I heard a rumor you’ve actually been here several days already. I hope that means you’ve made some progress in figuring out how armed men got to my sanctuary without being detected by your men.”

Brandt cleared his throat to buy himself a few seconds to recover from his surprise. How the hell did she know that already? The information they’d been onboard the station for a few days had only come out to operations personnel a short time ago. His assessment of T’karra went up several notches. Some Krytos insulated themselves from the communities they coexisted with, but clearly this one didn’t, or she would never have heard about their early arrival already. With any luck, the beauty that just walked into his office would turn out to be a damned useful source of information for them…if she didn’t kill Hawke in the next few minutes.

He glanced over to where Hawke was standing, carefully keeping his back to T’karra and his face in shadow until she was seated. “We’ll share what we know, but I should tell you the purpose of coming here early wasn’t only about investigating what happened to your sanctuary. We needed to see this place operate without anyone knowing they were being watched.”

“You were gathering intel. I can understand that. I am not sure I approve of your methods, but I can understand your intent,” she said, taking a seat at last.

Brandt couldn’t help but admire the graceful way she moved, and as he watched he had to admit that Hawke had been right, she was something special. Poised, confident, and achingly beautiful, he finally understood why his partner had risked so much to spend time with her. Stars, right now, he was sorry he’d stayed away from the Black Hole and its owner, despite the fact it would have only make the coming storm ten times worse.

Hawke braced himself and turned around to face T’karra, letting her see his face for the first time. “I really hope you meant that, T’karra. I hated not being able to tell you who I was, but it was necessary.”

“You!” T’karra snarled, the outer rim of her pupils turning a dull, angry red. She rose from her chair and took a single step forward before stopping again, her hands clenching and unclenching at her sides.

Yeah, this was going well.

“Computer, full privacy mode,” Brandt ordered, and all the walls went instantly opaque.

Hawke walked to within a few feet of T’karra and then offered her his hand. “Yes, it’s me. I know it’s a bit late, but I’d like to properly introduce myself. My name is Commander Hawke Summers, and I’m incredibly sorry I had to deceive you for the last few days.”

She stared down at his hand like it was a venomous snake, then raised her gaze to meet his, revealing there was more red than black in her eyes now, a clear warning she was on the edge of a full transformation. “You lying, scheming, bastard! You’re Alliance? I thought—no, forget what I thought. I was wrong. You weren’t in my sanctuary for any reason other than to spy on us. Did you think we had something to do with your commander being killed? He was my friend!”

The word friend came out as a guttural growl, and Hawke actually saw her fangs lengthen. The primal part of his own nature rose to the challenge, and he moved directly into her space, never breaking eye contact. “I was not spying on you! You said it yourself, we were gathering intel. It’s what we do, T’karra. I’d seen enough to know you had nothing to do with the attack before you and I ever met. Stars, we were fairly certain you and your sanctuary weren’t to blame before we ever set foot on the station. No one would jeopardize their home or family like that, not intentionally, but we had to be sure. Once I overheard your conversation with Danny Fields, I was convinced. I planned to finish my drink and leave, but then you walked over…and I didn’t want to leave anymore.”

“Liar,” she snarled, her clawed hands coming up to shove him squarely in the chest. It took all his concentration to keep his balance, and when he looked at her again, the transformation to battle form was complete. She was the same, yet different, a feral version of the beauty he’d gotten to know over the past two days.

She was even sexier like this.

EXCERPT

“Cami? Cami, look at me. Open your eyes and look at me.”

Warm hands cradled her face, bringing some semblance of reality back to her. Prying her lids open, she stared up at Tariq through blurry eyes and moaned. Everything hurt. Her heart pounded and her temples throbbed, making her lightheaded, and each breath came in short, shallow pants until her stomach cramped with nausea.

“Cami, focus,” Tariq ordered. “Look right here at me, only me.” He stroked her cheeks with his fingertips and petted her hair. “That’s it, angel. Deep breath. Good,” he praised when she complied. “Again. One more.”

Staring into his amber eyes, Cami breathed in through her nose and out through her mouth, focusing solely on his voice. “Keep talking, please.”

“I’m not going to let anything happen to you, remember?”

Then he did the most remarkable thing. Tariq pressed his palm to the side of her neck, using his thumb under her chin to tilt her face up, and kissed her. When their lips met, everything in her head melted away, dissolving into a peace she hadn’t known in years.

Her pulse accelerated once more, for a completely different reason this time, and Cami pressed closer, opening for him with a quiet whimper. The first glide of his tongue against hers sent a shiver down her spine, and the scrape of his fangs against her lower lip produced a lusty moan she didn’t know herself capable of making.

“That’s better,” Tariq whispered against the corner of her mouth. “You’re okay now.”

“Better than okay.” Cami tried to sit up, but stopped when Tariq closed his eyes and groaned. Only then did she realize they were sitting in the middle of the hallway with her perched in Tariq’s lap. “How did I get here?”

“I thought you were having a seizure or something, so I carried you out of the atrium.” He dropped his head back against the wall and groaned again. “Stop moving.”

“Oh.” Cami held perfectly still. “Did I hurt you?”

In response, he tucked her head under his chin and laughed. “No, angel, you didn’t hurt me.”

A hard bulge behind his zipper dug into her backside, alerting her to the problem. Pushing away from his chest, Cami peeked up at him through her lashes, realization finally dawning. “Oops, sorry.”

“Don’t apologize.” Sliding his arms around her midsection and behind her knees, Tariq stood, lifting her as easily as if she weighed nothing. “You need rest.”

“I’m feeling better now.” The pain in her head had vanished, and only a warm tingle in her belly—remnants of their kiss—remained. “Why did you kiss me?”

Though he looked straight ahead, Cami didn’t miss the faint smile or the way his voice gentled when he repeated his earlier assessment. “You talk too much.”

Resting her head on his shoulder, Cami sighed in contentment. “It only seems that way because you barely talk at all. I’ll try to be less vocal, though.”

Tariq pressed his lips to the top of her head as a satisfied rumbled vibrated his chest. “Don’t. I’ll get used to it.”
